The Tear Down
Soon after getting the car in the garage, I started tearing into the engine. I noticed the cooling system was full of a white sludge. And the engine bay was covered with a white powder. It turns out the previous owner tried using liquid head gasket sealer in the cooling system. It really made a mess.
I got a surprise when the cylinder head was removed. The engine had been opened up before and the cylinder head bolt holes had previously been repaired. This was a really downer, because I planned to install inserts. There are 2 sizes of inserts so I held out hope that I could still install the bigger inserts. So I got an easy out and removed the thread insert.
What a disaster, the inserts were the largest available. Now the only solution is a new engine. Check out the cylinder in the top of the picture. It looked like it was steam cleaned.
The engine bay was a mess from the liquid head gasket junk. There was white residue stuck to everything.
